At this point, I'm feeling pretty confident about the idea to add location descriptions to city pages (see earlier blog article "Driving Directions: Better Wiki Integration"). But please, do speak up if you have comments! Positive or negative, I'd like to hear them all.
Starting to think about how to write the new guidelines for city location descriptions, I noticed there are currently two separate sets of guidelines for city pages:
- Help:Layout guidelines, section "Cities, Seaports, Countries and States" (permalink rv100529)
- Help:Locations (permalink rv109028)
Interestingly, these guidelines are very similar, but not quite identical. And as far as I can see, neither is entirely up-to-date with current practice.
Before I start expanding the city guidelines, I think it's prudent to spend some time tidying what's already there:
- Resolve the duplication mentioned above.
- Separate guidelines for cities from those for countries/states, as these have clear differences.
- Update city guidelines to more closely reflect current practice.
Up to this point, my intention is not to change the substance of any guidelines, but rather to clarify them. However, because I only play ATS, I'm not necessarily the best person to do this work. I'd appreciate it if you all kept a close eye on me here. Please don't hesitate to get involved! The best place for discussing this work on the guidelines may be below this blog post.
Once the above is done, I'll add the new guidelines for city location descriptions (e.g. Kennewick#Locations). I'm choosing Help:City location descriptions as the page name for those.
