US 12 is a highway in southern Washington, northern Idaho, and southern Montana. There are two main sections. From west to east, the first section starts at US 101 in Aberdeen and ends at WA 8 in Elma halfway near Olympia. However, the section is marked from Aberdeen to Olympia as the icon is shown on a standard diamond interchange. The second section starts at Interstate 5 north of Longview and ends at US 93 in Missoula. East of Missoula the highway is only present in small patches (see course section for more details). In real life, US 12 runs 2484 miles (3998 km) from Aberdeen, WA, to Detroit, MI.

Course[]

The westernmost segment of US 12 in ATS is very short, running from the highway's western terminus in Aberdeen, WA, to Elma. After a gap in the highway, the 12 resumes at its intersection with Interstate 5 north of Longview, where it begins a rather scenic route across the Cascades. Just east of the interstate the 12 crosses Mayfield Lake, and soon after crosses the Cowlitz River via a high bridge downstream from the Mossyrock Dam. Around here there is a Deepgrove logging site, which provides access to Mt. St. Helens. The highway then curves around a deep valley, which, at its east end, offers an excellent view of Mt. Rainier, the summit of the Cascades and one of the most prominent mountains in the US. Past this valley the highway crosses the summit of White Pass (4501 ft), and begins its descent by running along Dog Lake and Clear Creek Falls, the latter featuring an informational plaque. The highway then skirts the edge of Rimrock Lake, and after running along the Tieton River, meets WA 410 at Naches. After crossing the Naches River, the 12 reaches Yakima, where it begins running concurrent with Interstate 82. The 12 breaks away in Richland, where, running concurrent with Interstate 182, it crosses the Columbia River upstream from Kennewick. In Pasco the highway intersects with US 395 and WA 397.

Out of Pasco, US 12 crosses the Snake River, and runs along the Columbia to Wallula Junction, which features a weigh station. The highway then sets off across the wrinkled Columbia Plateau, passing to the north of the Blue Mountains; along this route it passes through the towns Waitsburg and Dayton. This is approximately the same route followed by the American Corps of Expedition on their way home in 1806, historical significance recognized with Lewis and Clark Trail State Park, which features an unmarked road that runs a loop along the south bank of the Touchet River. The highway soon returns to the Snake River, which it runs along to Clarkston, where it crosses both the Snake and the state line into Idaho. Right across the border the highway runs through Lewiston, where, after crossing the Clearwater, it begins running concurrent with US 95. In the middle of this concurrency are east and westbound weigh stations, which sit in the median. After the 95 breaks southward, the 12 follows the Clearwarer to Kooskia, where it currently ends at its intersection with ID-13. From here the highway climbs through the Clearwater Mountains and the Bitterroot Range to Montana.

US 12 enters Montana via Lolo Pass (5233 ft/1595 m), a historic route across the Bitterroot Range with a rest area at the summit. The highway descends from the pass to the Bitterroot Valley and the town of Lolo, where it begins running concurrent with US 93, which breaks away at Missoula. East of Missoula, US 12 is only present in small patches: along Prospect Avenue in Helena, where it is concurrent with US 287 and intersects with I-15; concurrent with US 89 to the south of, and through, White Sulphur Springs; briefly concurrent with US 87 through Roundup; along Main Street in Miles City; and intersecting with I-94 east of Miles City, suggesting that it will one day be extended east towards North Dakota.
