Montana is a state of the United States, which is featured in American Truck Simulator as a map expansion DLC and in the 18 Wheels of Steel series. It was released on August 4, 2022. It is the ninth map of DLC involving map expansions, but the eighth paid one.

The state is bordered by Idaho to the west, the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan to the north, Wyoming to the south, and North Dakota and South Dakota to the east.

Release History[]

  • 7 September 2021: During Wyoming Release Stream, Wyoming DLC Map Lead Davido, said he and his team have already started working in the next state after Texas and that the community was smart enough to know which would be this state.[2]
  • 10 October 2021: A mysterious teaser video is posted on SCS's YouTube channel and in their blog showing a 2D artist creating a landscape painting featuring a bitterroot, the Montana state flower.[3]
  • 17 November 2021: During the Czech & Slovak Games Week 2021 stream, SCS developer Davido confirmed Montana will be the next state after Texas with a trailer, also a first official blog post with a few new screenshots is made[4], alongside the Steam store page being released.[5]
  • 16 December 2021: In the SCS Christmas Stream, the team reveals new screenshots of Montana. Pavel also mentions that the development of Montana is in a good pace and is in a “competition” between the development of Texas and Montana, and one of the two states has an unknown release time to which will come first.[6]

Since the release of the DLC, new major content has been added to it for free in game updates (not including road connections to new neighbouring states).

Geography[]

Montana is located in the Western region of the United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the west, the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan to the north, Wyoming to the south, and Dakotas (North Dakota and South Dakota) to the east. With an area of 147,040 square miles (380,800 km2), Montana is slightly larger than Japan. It is the fourth-largest state in the United States after Alaska, Texas, and California, and the largest landlocked state.

Geographically, the state can be divided into two regions: the Great Plains, and the Rocky Mountains.

The Great Plains of Montana are part of the Interior Plain of North America that stretches from Canada south to Mexico. The Great Plains are made of high, gently rolling land interrupted by hills and wide river valleys including the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers. Groups of mountains spring up from these plains; the Bear Paws, Big Snowy, Judith, and Little Rocky Mountains. In the southeast, badlands swept by wind and water showcase beautiful natural stone columns of red, yellow, brown, and white.

The Rocky Mountains of Montana is covered by flat, grassy valleys and mountains blanketed in fir, spruce, pine, and other evergreens. The southwest valleys are from 30 to 40 miles wide while the valleys in the north are narrower; from 1 to 5 miles wide. Many of the mountains are covered with snow for about 8 to 10 months of the year and a few active glaciers dwell in the higher altitudes. The Montana Rocky Mountains are known for their clear, cold lakes.

There are more than 50 mountain ranges in this region including the Absaroka, Beartooth, Beaverhead, Big Belt, Bitterroot, Bridger, Cabinet, Crazy, Flathead, Gallatin, Little Belt, Madison, Mission, Swan, and Tobacco Root ranges. Granite Peak, the highest point in Montana, rises 12,799 feet above sea level in south-central Montana.

Unfortunately, the Rocky Mountain Region is always in danger of earthquakes due to the faults that run through the area.

The Continental Divide, the place that separates waters running west into the Pacific Ocean and east to the Atlantic Ocean, runs through the Rocky Mountain Region. Montana is the only state that has rivers that drain into the Gulf of Mexico (Missouri River system), Hudson Bay (Bellys, St. Marys, and Waterton Rivers), and the Pacific Ocean (Columbia River system).

Climate[]

Montana's east and west regions experience very different climates, separated by the Continental Divide, although generally the state tends to be hot and dry in summer and cold with snow in winter. The western regions generally have a milder climate than the east, with warmer winters, cooler summers, and lighter winds. Their rainfall is also more evenly distributed throughout the year. The east tends to have less humidity than the west, as well as more sunny days on average. Montana's cold winters are frequently broken by warm, windy spells in the east, known as Chinook winds, which can last for several days at a time. The heaviest snowfall throughout the state is from November to March, and most cities receive an annual average of 30 to 50 inches (76 to 127 cm). Rainfall is generally light, with most falling between May and July.
