Washington State Route 20 (SR 20) is a state highway that runs north of Washington. The highway begins at US 101 in Discovery Bay southeast of Port Angeles and ends at US 395 west of Colville. The highway also runs across the Puget Sound by ferry from Port Townsend to Coupeville.

Course[]

WA 20 begins in Discovery Bay, where it intersects with US 101. At Port Townsend the highway crosses Puget Sound via ferry, currently the only ferry in ATS, landing at Coupeville on Whidbey Island. The highway continues north to Deception Pass, where a pair of high bridges connect Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island; these straits offer a viewpoint. There the highway turns east and, after returning to the mainland, intersects with Interstate 5 at Burlington.

What follows is among the most scenic roads in the game. After leaving the Puget Sound Area, the highway enters the dense forests of the Northern Cascade Range, where it also enters Northern Cascades National Park. Shortly after entering the park the main access road to Bellingham's Deepgrove logging site branches from the highway, and soon after the 20 passes through Newhalem. The highway runs below the snowcapped peaks and along the Skagit River, which it crosses downstream from the Diablo Dam. On a wildly curving route the highway crosses Thunder Arm of Diablo Lake, and after a grade overlooks the reservoir at a vista point. The highway then leaves the national park and, below the Early Winters Spires, traverses Washington Pass (5477 ft), the eastbound slope of which featuring a steep grade and large switchback. As the highway continues east the surrounding mountains transition into the more moderate Okanogan Mountains, and after passing by a Sunshine Crops farm, the highway reaches the towns of Okanogan and Omak. Here the highway meets US 97, which it follows to Tonasket.

Out of Tonasket and the scrubby valley of the Okanogan, WA 20 climbs into the forests of the Monashee Mountains, a subrange of the Columbia Mountains (American geologists consider these to be part of the Northern Rocky Mountains). Here the highway crosses Sherman Pass, which, at 5574 feet, is the highest mountain pass in Washington. The highway then descends to Barney's Junction, where, by the Columbia River, it meets US 395 and follows it to Colville, where WA 20 currently terminates. In real life, WA 20 continues on to Newport, where it meets with US 2 near the Idaho border.
