Level crossings are points on some roads where railway intersects the road. Though mainly dormant, these crossings will often activate for trains that spawn down the line. When the lights start flashing and the barriers come down, you are required to stop and let the train go by. An invisible wall blocks passage through the crossing until the barriers come fully up.

Trivia[]

  • A unique type of crossing found in some countries contains only a crossbuck with no barriers or lights. Because of this, trains never spawn at these crossings.
  • There used to be a bug with level crossings. If you stopped too close to the crossing, the light started to flash but the barriers did not come down and the train did not appear. While it might seem like a bug, this was done on purpose, to prevent you from getting stuck between the crossing gates and getting hit by the old CargoRail train, which doesn't have any collision. This still occurs on the old railroad crossings prefab distinguished by having two tracks with quite a huge gap between them, two crossing gates on each side and a weird and outdated catenary model.
  • On older parts of the map, the train that passes through the crossings is always a CargoRail freight train. However, passenger trains can also be seen on railroad running next to the roads or at viaducts. This phenomenon changed with newer map expansions, as the new train and tram system was introduced.
  • Austrian, Bosnian, Hungarian, Slovak and Czech crossings are the same. This is incorrect as Austria, Bosnia and Hungary in reality have different crossings.
  • The Heart of Russia DLC preview screenshots have Czech crossings, which obviously will be replaced by the appropriate Russian crossings after the release.
  • For some reason, level crossings in all countries have the old-style Czechoslovak electromechanical bell.
  • The amber light on the UK level crossing model is incorrectly animated.
